Dormitory

Some students may choose to live in a dormitory setting with other students, most often with Japanese students. This provides a fun opportunity to meet other young people. A student cafeteria is usually available as well as vending machines, public telephones, and a coin laundry. Meals are not included in the program cost; utilities and bed linens are included.

If you choose to sign up for a meal plan, costs are usually collected during the first week of your program. Most dormitories require the student to pay meal plan costs (if applicable) up front. Dorms, which offer the meal plan, require approximately 55,000 Yen for a regular KCP semester and 41,000 Yen for the summer short term. The meal plan includes breakfasts and dinners; lunch is not included. Please note that you must pay in Yen, so have some Yen available when you arrive. Please also note that your placement in a dorm is based on whether you have chosen a meal plan. For this reason, you cannot cancel the meal plan after you have selected it.

Dormitory life offers several advantages. KCP dorms feature private rooms and house both Japanese  and other foreign students. Although dorms are generally more restrictive in Japan than they tend to be in the U.S., they are the better choice for students who want the freedom to come and go as they please (within curfews), or for those who want more interaction with young Japanese people. Also, if you have special meal requests or eating habits, you will have more control over your meals in a dormitory.

Internet service

Most dorms have computers in the lounge for common use. Students can use the phone lines there to get Internet access, once they have arranged with an Internet provider for the Internet connection service (usually for a setup fee plus a monthly fee).

Some dorms have a phone in each room. Again, you can use this line for Internet access once you have arranged with an Internet service provider.
