Can I bring my laptop (and other electronics) from home? Do I need a converter/adapter?

If you like having your laptop, by all means bring it. Whether you need a converter/adapter depends on the model. Usually we recommend bringing both an adapter and a current converter, although most new laptops all have converters built in. If your laptop plug is the three-prong type, you definitely need an adapter. Japan accepts round two-prong plugs.

I was planning to bring an ATM card. Can I use it in ATM machines in Japan?

There are a limited number of ATM machines that will accept debit cards in Japan. However, their popularity is increasing and it will not be difficult for you to find one. We suggest you use the ATM in the post offices or at Citibank. We’ve heard that some students’ cards work well at the ATMs in 7Eleven stores, but not all. Your student coordinators will be able to show you where these ATM machines are. Withdrawing money this way is very convenient, and if you get low on money, you can have someone from home deposit more funds into your account. Make sure your ATM has a Visa or Mastercard mark on it. Most international ATMs require these providers.

Should I bring a backpack for my books?

You will need something to carry your books. Every student uses something. Some U.S. students who came without a carry bag had to buy one, so if you have a favorite backpack or bag, bring it.
